12 x 12 inches | Original Watercolor on Archival Paper
The trees in Holding Ground are not simply standing — they are gripping. Deep root systems spread and branch across the forest floor, shaped by rich pigment and water finding their own paths through granulation fluid, gravity, and time. The result is a surface that echoes the actual biology of trees: fibrous, determined, alive.
Warm ochre and burgundy press against cool teal and green, while a luminous center draws the eye deeper into the forest interior. The root tracks — some drawn with the fine edge of a pipette tip — carry the weight of something ancient and persistent. Fine branching lines drawn with a glass pen and watercolor add delicate structure to the canopy above, tracing the reach of trees toward light.
This piece asks the same question the forest does: what does it take to stay rooted?
